Dear colleagues,

It’s our pleasure to formally invite you to present your work as part of the 2009 POMS Human Behavior and Behavioral Dynamics in OM Track.  Last year was the first time a track of this kind was developed, and the success and enthusiasm with which it was greeted was frankly remarkable.  Reflecting on 2008, we saw a total of 28 paper presentations in seven excellent paper sessions including “Experimental and Analytical Methods”, “Contracts, Collaborations and Projects”, and “Social Networks and Intelligence” to name a few.

Along with the recent emergence of the new POMS College of Human Behavior in Operations Management, we plan to build on our 2008 momentum in developing an excellent program for our 2009 meeting.

With that said, for 2009, we encourage the submission of papers that are related, but not restricted, to the following broad themes:

• Studies of the Beer Game have been instrumental in advancing our understanding of specific behaviors.  But what other

• How robust are the implications of human behavior with regards to past OM modeling assumptions, findings and prescriptions?  What evidence exists that suggests the long tradition of marginal attention to human behavior has served as a barrier to OM research applicability?

• What can be done to better infuse the role of human behavior into operations management research in a way that does not pervert this goal into arms race for overly complicating existing toy-models in OR?  How can we encourage diligence in researchers interested in leveraging descriptive models of human behavior in their own work – such that they do not simply pick up assumed codifications of human behavior but in fact pursue human subject work themselves that helps further refine the extant descriptive models?

• What is the effect of human behavior in the global management of operations and supply chains e.g. in the transferability of practices and in the management of global development projects across national borders and across different cultures?

Descriptive, theory building, theory testing and case-grounded papers based on rigorous research methodologies are all welcome.

All abstracts should submitted to the POMS on-line site, http://www.poms.org, which will be opening starting November 1, 2008. The deadline for submissions of abstracts is January 15, 2009. Abstracts should be limited to 150 words. A registered author may not be allowed to present more than three papers due to scheduling conflicts. Acceptance of abstracts will be notified through e-mail by January 27, 2009

Submission of Full Length Papers: Submission of full length papers is not mandatory for participation and presentation of papers in the conference. However, participants may submit full length papers to be published in the electronic proceedings of the conference.

Conference Registration: All registration for the conference will be done on line through the POMS website http://www.poms.org.

Again we fully welcome your contributions to making 2009 program a memorable one, and look forward to seeing you in Orlando.

            Sincerely,

            Dr. Elliot Bendoly
            Dr. Henrique Correa
experimental paradigms – that at once embody the ease and cleanliness of the Beer Game – can be used to pick up on different behavioral and operational phenomena?  How can more complex (and openly available) activities contribute to both research and teaching relating to the nuances of human behavior in OM contexts?
